Magnetic Island is a short ferry ride away from the mainland city of Townsville, Queensland. It is the most easily accessible island holiday location on Australia’s east coast. There are two ferries servicing Maggie. A vehicle ferry that also carries passengers operated by Fantasea and a passenger only ferry operated by Sealink.
Offering 22 secluded bays, pristine beaches, crystal clear waters, abundant wildlife and a wide variety of land and water activities there is something special to do for everyone, of every age. Breakfast with the Koalas, scuba dive a shipwreck in the Coral Sea or simply walk to the beach.
The climate is tropical with a yearly average maximum temperature of 28.8C and minimum of 19.7C.
Life on “Maggie” is relaxed. Clothing should be casual, cool and light but don’t forget to bring something a little warmer for the winter evenings – June through August. You will need the usual essentials to enjoy the sunshine such as sunscreen, a hat and swimmers. But don’t worry, if you do forget something, all essentials (and most non-essentials) can be bought on the island. There are lovely boutiques to browse and gift shops where you can purchase beach essentials. Most land and water activity equipment can also be hired in Nelly Bay.
Nelly Bay is the most convenient and accessible of the island towns as it harbors the only marina on the island and is the port for both ferry points. Water’s Edge is a short taxi ride or 7-minute stroll from the ferry terminal and is conveniently located for all amenities and shops. There is a pharmacy, medical centre, post office, newsagent and two local supermarkets a short stroll from the marina.
Getting around is easy – even if your car is at home. With only 12km of road to travel you can hire a car, take a taxi, hail a bus, ride a bike or for shorter distances simply walk the roadside boardwalks. For the adventure seeker there are also several less traditional options such as scooters, Segway’s and even horse riding.
